Smart Tech with Built-In Compliance Support
Self-Monitoring Fire Panels and Power Supplies
Our fire alarm systems use addressable panels and supervised power supplies that send automatic alerts for issues like device failure, circuit damage, or low batteries. Fewer manual checks is always a good thing.
Log Entries Automatically and Find Data Faster
Our access control systems log entry attempts automatically, creating an auditable trail for industries with strict security requirements. Features like time-based lockouts and dual-authentication support federal government and insurance mandates.
Simplify Video Retention Requirements with AI
We configure video systems to meet industry retention standards—like 30 days for retail or 90 for cannabis—and set alerts for nearing capacity. Smart storage options include encrypted cloud backups, local drives, or hybrid setups with overwrite protection.

Compliance & Inspections FAQs
How often should fire alarm systems be inspected?
Per NFPA 72 and Chicago’s Municipal Code, fire alarm systems must be inspected at least once a year by a qualified professional. However, not all components follow the same schedule:
- Control panels and batteries often require semiannual or monthly testing to ensure reliable performance.
- Smoke detectors should be tested annually and sensitivity-tested every 2 years, unless otherwise specified.
- Notification appliances (horns, strobes, speakers) typically require annual inspection and testing.
- Manual pull stations and duct detectors must also be checked annually.
In Chicago, additional inspections may be required depending on the building’s occupancy type, fire protection system configuration, and AHJ requirements. SMG Security helps clients stay compliant with all local and national standards by automating test schedules, maintaining inspection reports, and coordinating directly with AHJs.
What does an inspection entail?
Inspections include testing all system components, verifying signal transmission, checking battery health, and ensuring compliance with current codes.
There’s a lot more to it than that of course. More than you could reasonably expect to be in an FAQ. If you’re looking for more information on how SMG Security performs our inspections, we’d love to go over it with you during a phone call or free on-site consultation.
Can SMG Security assist with compliance for multiple properties?
Yes, SMG Security offers scalable solutions for clients managing multiple properties. Whatever your needs, we have the experience and the equipment to assist.
What happens if my system fails an inspection?
If your property fails to pass an inspection by a regulator, that’s a problem that could lead to fines and even the closure of the property. Trust us, that’s not a place you want to be.
However, if you’ve partnered with SMG Security to perform standard inspections of your security and safety assets, and we encounter an issue? That’s great news, because now we can correct the issues before it leads to serious problems for your business.
