Integrated Security, Fire Safety, and 24/7 Monitoring for Construction Sites in Chicago
Integrated Security for Construction Sites
Active job sites are open, changing, and full of high-value targets, from copper and tools to heavy equipment. SMG Security protects every phase of construction with mobile-ready systems that deter theft, document activity, and scale as the project grows.

Custom Security Systems for Construction Sites
Job sites face theft, vandalism, and liability claims, often after hours when no one's watching. SMG deploys rugged and mobile surveillance that keeps eyes on the site day and night, with live monitoring that can stop a crime in progress.
How video security protects your construction site:
- Solar-powered mobile surveillance trailers deployed in minutes, no permanent power or network needed
- AI-driven detection with floodlights and live audio talk-down to deter intruders before they act
- Time-stamped footage that resolves theft claims, injury disputes, and contractor liability questions
As a site moves from foundation to finish, its security needs change week by week. SMG's intrusion systems protect trailers, material stores, and finished interiors with wireless sensors that redeploy as the project evolves.
How intrusion detection protects your construction site:
- Wireless, relocatable sensors for site offices, tool cribs, and material storage containers
- Cellular communication that works before permanent power or phone lines are ever installed
- Perimeter detection for fenced yards, gates, and equipment laydown areas
Controlling who enters an active site protects both your assets and your safety record. SMG installs access control that manages gates and entrances while logging every worker, subcontractor, and delivery.
How access control protects your construction site:
- Gate and entrance credentials that keep unauthorized people off a hazardous active site
- Time-based permissions for subcontractors and deliveries tied to their scheduled work windows
- Entry logs that support OSHA accountability, headcounts, and site-safety documentation
Construction sites carry real fire risk from hot work, temporary wiring, and combustible materials, often before permanent systems are live. SMG provides code-compliant detection and temporary life-safety measures that protect crews throughout the build.
How fire & life safety protects your construction site:
- Temporary and permanent fire detection staged to match each phase of construction
- Standpipe, sprinkler, and alarm installation engineered to NFPA and Chicago code as the build progresses
- Emergency communication and notification that keep crews safe during occupancy transitions
New construction in Chicago must clear layers of inspection before occupancy, and delays cost money. SMG's NICET-certified team designs, documents, and tests life-safety systems to earn AHJ sign-off without slowing your schedule.
How inspections & compliance protect your construction site:
- Fire and life-safety system commissioning built to pass Chicago AHJ and NFPA inspection the first time
- Digital documentation, test logs, and code reviews that keep your certificate of occupancy on schedule
- Direct AHJ coordination to resolve deficiencies before they become costly project delays
A theft or fire on an unmanned site can go unnoticed for hours without active monitoring. SMG watches your job site around the clock from a UL-Listed, 5-Diamond central station, responding the moment something happens.
How alarm monitoring protects your construction site:
- 24/7 central-station response to intrusion and fire events on unstaffed overnight sites
- Live video monitoring with talk-down to interrupt theft and vandalism as it happens
- Cellular and mesh signal paths that keep monitoring active anywhere on a developing site

“They are always responsive and provide fair pricing.”
I am in charge of purchasing for 4 buyers and 350 to 400 field people, and consequently rely on trusted subcontractors. They are always responsive and provide fair pricing. We look forward to continuing to work with them.
Integrated Security and Fire Protection for Construction Sites in Chicago
Construction sites are among the most difficult environments to secure. They're open by necessity, constantly changing, and packed with high-value materials and equipment, making them frequent targets for theft and vandalism. Protecting a job site takes security that's as mobile and adaptable as the project itself. Since 1988, SMG Security has protected Chicagoland construction sites throughout every phase of construction.
From solar-powered surveillance trailers that deploy in minutes to wireless intrusion sensors that redeploy as the site evolves, our systems are built for the realities of active construction. We combine deterrence, documentation, and around-the-clock monitoring to prevent theft, document liability, and keep crews safe.
We also carry projects across the finish line. Our NICET-certified team commissions and inspects the permanent fire and life-safety systems your building needs for occupancy, coordinating directly with Chicago AHJs to keep your schedule on track. Construction Site FAQs
What fire protection is required on an active construction site?
NFPA 241 sets the baseline: portable fire extinguishers, temporary standpipes and water supply, clear egress routes, and a written fire safety program with a designated site manager. Hot work like welding or cutting needs a permit, a trained fire watch, and extinguishers on hand. Chicago's Municipal Code (14B-33-3316) also specifically requires a continuous fire watch during nonworking hours on new construction over 40 feet tall, or for any unusually hazardous demolition or construction work.
What is ERCES, and when is it required in a new building?
ERCES (Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement System) boosts in-building radio signals so first responders can communicate reliably, since materials like concrete and steel can block coverage. Nationally, it's required under the International Fire Code (IFC 510) when a radio survey shows signal strength below code minimums, often in high-rises or large buildings. Chicago enforces its own amended fire prevention code, so confirm the exact trigger and threshold with the Chicago Fire Prevention Bureau or your AHJ.
When does the fire alarm need to be commissioned for a certificate of occupancy?
Commissioning happens after installation but before occupancy: the fire alarm undergoes full functional testing, then a final acceptance test with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and building owner present. In Chicago, a Fire Prevention Bureau inspection is a required step in the Certificate of Occupancy process, and it's illegal to occupy the building before that certificate is issued.
Do you need power or internet on-site to install security?
Not necessarily. Our systems can run on cellular/LTE connectivity, so as long as there's power on-site, security can typically be installed and monitored before permanent internet service is active.
